FAQs

What is advocacy?

Advocacy is about supporting people to have their voice heard, understand their rights, and be involved in decisions that affect their lives. We listen to what matters to you and help you express your views, wishes, and feelings. We do not make decisions on your behalf or tell you what to do.

Who can use your service?

We support people who are eligible for our advocacy services. This may include older people, people with disabilities, mental health needs, learning disabilities, dementia, long-term health conditions, unpaid carers, and others who need independent advocacy. Eligibility may vary depending on the service or contract in your local area.

Is your service free?

Yes. Our advocacy services are free to people who meet the eligibility criteria for the service..

What does "independent" mean?

We are an independent charity. We are separate from health boards, local authorities, and other organisations involved in making decisions about your care or support. Our role is to represent your views and help protect your rights.

How do I make a referral?

You can refer yourself, or a referral can be made by a family member, friend, professional, or another organisation where appropriate. Referrals can be made using our online referral form, by telephone, or by email.

What information do I need to provide?

We will ask for basic information such as your name, contact details, where you live, and a brief description of the support you need. We only collect the information necessary to assess your referral and provide our service.

What happens after I submit a referral?

Once we receive your referral, we will review the information and determine whether it meets our service criteria. If we need any additional information, we will contact you. If we cannot provide support directly, we will explain why and, where possible, signpost you to another suitable organisation.

How long will I wait?

Waiting times vary depending on the type of advocacy required and current demand. We aim to respond to all referrals as quickly as possible and will keep you informed about the progress of your referral.

Will my information be kept confidential?

Yes. We treat all personal information confidentially and process it in accordance with UK data protection legislation. We will only share information where you have given permission or where we are legally required to do so, such as if there is a serious safeguarding concern. See Our Confidentiality Policy.

*Confidentiality will only be breached where there is a risk to the person or someone else, and the individual will be informed if confidentiality needs to be broken.

Can someone else speak to you on my behalf?

Yes, where appropriate. We will always try to involve you as much as possible and, where necessary, obtain your consent before discussing your information with someone else.

Can I refer someone without their consent?

Where possible, referrals should be made with the person’s knowledge and consent. However, there may be circumstances where consent is not possible or another legal basis applies, such as when there are safeguarding concerns or statutory advocacy duties. If you are unsure, please contact us for advice.

Do you offer legal advice?

No. We provide independent advocacy, not legal advice. If you need legal representation, we can signpost you to an appropriate organisation.

What areas do you cover?

We provide advocacy services across Gwynedd and Ynys Mon. The services available may vary depending on where you live and the funding arrangements in your local authority area.
